Menstruation is a biological process that almost every woman undergoes each month for approximately 40 years. Historically, and moreover, culturally in Jamaica, feminine hygiene marketing perpetuated the idea that periods as well as feminine hygiene “matters” were embarrassing and should be kept discrete.
This may explain the lack of discourse around the quality of these products. As such women would simply choose the brand they were “introduced to” as a teenager, the brand that had the loudest voice in the market or the brand they could afford. The unfortunate truth however was that amongst all these choices, none was healthier for her.
Ordinary pads are made of inexpensive materials such as plastic or cotton alternatives. These pads can cause feminine hygiene problems that women are ashamed to discuss or may not relate their issues to their pads. This leads to a cycle whereby menstrual health is stigmatized.
